Today, September 1, marks the 47th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). On this day in 1978, then-President Ziaur Rahman established the party and served as its founding chairman.
To commemorate the anniversary, BNP has organized various programs across the country, including in Dhaka. These activities include hoisting the party flag, paying tribute at the grave of founding chairman Ziaur Rahman, holding discussion sessions, and organizing processions. Tomorrow, a rally will be held from the central office, and on September 3, discussion sessions will take place at the upazila and municipal levels.
In a message yesterday, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman stated that genuine democracy has yet to be established in the country. He emphasized the need to ensure the rule of law, freedom of expression, and independence of the media to safeguard citizens’ democratic rights. He also highlighted the importance of an elected, accountable government.
In a separate statement, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that ensuring free and fair elections and strengthening the rule of law are essential to guarantee citizens’ freedom. He added that BNP’s goal is to eliminate misrule and establish a humane and peaceful society.
It is noteworthy that after the assassination of Ziaur Rahman in 1981, his wife Khaleda Zia took over the leadership of BNP. However, since 2018, she has not been actively involved in politics due to prolonged imprisonment and health issues. Currently, party activities are being managed by Tarique Rahman, who resides in the United Kingdom.
