BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmad has said that his party will not bow to the designs of any political party. He emphasized that the fate of 180 million people cannot be toyed with and that the state must function in an orderly and systematic manner. He added that the people of the country are the ultimate authority to make decisions.

He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 37th founding anniversary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), held on Saturday at the Engineers Institution auditorium in Ramna, Dhaka.

Regarding constitutional change, Salahuddin Ahmad took a firm stance, stating that no one has the right to alter the Constitution of Bangladesh without following legal and constitutional processes. He warned that if such a practice begins, demands for frequent constitutional changes will arise in the future.

Raising questions about the proportional representation (PR) system, Salahuddin Ahmad asked: “When 56 percent of Bangladesh’s people do not even understand the PR system, can we really want such a system?” He added that attempts to confuse the nation with such claims should not be made. He urged those who harbor vile political motives at the expense of national interest to return to the right path.

Expressing doubts about attempts to disrupt the election, Salahuddin Ahmad said it seems that one political party is working in favor of the forces trying to create unrest or delay the election. He warned that if the election is delayed, the country will once again face the outbreak of “fascism.”

On the matter of the upcoming election being based on the implementation of the July Charter, he said that the issues agreed upon through the National Consensus Commission are being implemented. However, he stressed that for constitutional matters, the next parliament is needed to carry them out, following the prescribed process of constitutional amendment. Thus, it is the responsibility of the next parliament to fulfill those commitments.

The discussion meeting, chaired by NDP Chairman Abdullah Al Harun, was also addressed by Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan, Ganodal President A.T.M. Golam Mawla Chowdhury, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party President Khandaker Lutfur Rahman, Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Syed Nurul Islam, among other leaders.
