BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the Farakka Treaty must be finalized in accordance with Bangladesh’s intentions and national interests.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Dhaka on Saturday (May 16), marking Farakka Long March Day.

Mirza Fakhrul said that Bangladesh must reach a fair agreement on the Ganges water-sharing issue through discussions with the Indian government. He said, “The Farakka Treaty must be concluded according to Bangladesh’s intentions. Otherwise, opportunities for improving bilateral relations will be hindered.”

He further said that no agreement that harms the country’s interests is acceptable. All negotiations must ensure Bangladesh’s rights and interests.

The BNP Secretary General noted that the Ganges water-sharing treaty will expire in 2026. In this context, he emphasized the need for timely and effective initiatives to protect national interests. He also described the Padma Barrage project as a timely decision.

Mirza Fakhrul said that people must remain united to protect national interests and sovereignty. He alleged that various groups are trying to destabilize the country’s political situation, but no conspiracy will succeed if the people remain united.

The discussion meeting was attended by central BNP leaders, water and environmental experts, and representatives of civil society. Speakers called for building national unity to ensure fair water rights over the country’s rivers.
