Former Chief Justice A. B. M. Khairul Haque was arrested by law enforcement authorities on Thursday morning from his residence in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. He was later sent to jail following a court order.
According to police sources, Khairul Haque faces one murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka, and two other cases at Fatullah Model Police Station in Narayanganj on charges of sedition and verdict forgery.
The arrest has triggered a strong reaction in the country’s political arena. Senior leaders of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have sharply criticized the former Chief Justice’s actions and called for exemplary punishment.
Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan this afternoon, the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said:
"Although delayed, we sincerely thank the government for taking action against Justice Khairul Haque. One of the major enemies of the people and democracy has finally been arrested."
He alleged that Khairul Haque, through his brief verdict, abolished the caretaker government system and pushed the country’s politics into a deep crisis.
"His political ambitions led him to taint the judiciary. He caused a sacred institution like the judiciary to lose the trust of the people."
The BNP demanded that the full force of the law be applied against Justice Khairul Haque to ensure exemplary punishment, so that no one holding a constitutional position dares to betray the state in the future.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, in a post on his verified Facebook page, wrote:
"We’ve been waiting... Khairul Haque served as Chief Justice during a fascist regime. He never understood the sanctity of his responsibility nor did he protect his entrusted position."
He claimed that Khairul Haque was someone whose verdict handed “a license for abduction, murder, and plunder” to political mafias. Expressing hope, he added:
"The former Chief Justice must be brought to justice and endure a punishment that serves as a historical lesson."Who Was Justice Khairul Haque?
