In the context of the potential imposition of additional tariffs by the United States on Bangladeshi products, Interim Government’s Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin has clearly stated that no trade agreement will be made with the U.S. at the cost of the country’s interests.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday, he said, “Positive discussions are underway with the United States regarding tariff reductions, but the government will not take any decision that harms Bangladesh’s interests.”
He informed that the government has sent a letter to the U.S. Trade Minister but has not yet received a formal invitation. Once invited, a Bangladeshi delegation will go to the U.S. to participate in the talks.
Sheikh Bashiruddin added, “Due to the U.S. tariff structure and legal complexities, the government is not appointing any lobbyist. Moreover, the opportunity for tariff reduction is very limited.”
In response to a question, he said there might be a virtual discussion on Friday, July 25, if not a direct one. Expressing optimism, he said, “Tariff reduction will be possible through discussions. The ministry is working day and night on this.”
35% Additional Tariff Effective from August 1
It is worth mentioning that, according to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement, from August 1 of this year, a 35% additional tariff will be imposed on Bangladeshi products. This decision is feared to have a significant impact on Bangladesh’s export sector.
The government says it seeks a peaceful resolution to this crisis through talks but will not compromise on national interests.
