The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a large quantity of ammunition in a special operation in the remote border area of Panchhari upazila in Khagrachhari. A total of 1,400 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operation.
On Saturday morning (April 11), the matter was confirmed in a press release by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Robiul Islam, commanding officer of Panchhari Battalion (3 BGB).
According to BGB sources, based on confidential information, patrol activities were intensified on Friday afternoon in the border road area of Kataltali under Bouddhamonipara village. A patrol team led by Naib Subedar Md. Shah Alam took position in the area.
Around 4:00 PM, four suspicious individuals were seen entering the area on two motorcycles. When they were ordered to stop, they fled into nearby hilly terrain, leaving behind their motorcycles after noticing the presence of BGB personnel.
A search of the area later led to the recovery of 1,400 rounds of ammunition abandoned at the scene.
Later, while transporting the recovered ammunition to the BOP, the situation became tense. Around 100–110 armed militants attempted to surround the BGB patrol team. Immediately afterward, an additional patrol team led by Major SM Imrul Kayes from Panchhari Battalion headquarters arrived at the scene, bringing the situation under control. After sensing the presence of additional forces, the militants retreated.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Robiul Islam said that BGB remains on high alert to prevent illegal arms and ammunition smuggling in border areas. He added that intelligence surveillance will be further increased and regular operations will continue to strictly suppress such crimes.
