Hoping to take advantage of the Mirpur pitch that favors spin bowling, West Indies included spinners in their playing XI for the second match. On the field, their strategy is showing results—Bangladesh is struggling against the Caribbean spinners’ spin.
On Tuesday, October 21, winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz chose to bat first. Although the innings started with some promise, Bangladesh quickly came under pressure, losing two wickets for just 41 runs. Sai Hasan scored 6 runs off 16 balls, and Towhid Hridoy made 12 runs off 19 balls before returning to the pavilion.
Batsmen Nazmul Hasan Shanto and others tried to stabilize the innings, but Shanto was dismissed after scoring 15 runs off 21 balls when the team total reached 68. Soumya Sarkar and Mahidul Ankon took responsibility for holding one end and continuing the innings.
However, they could not build a substantial innings. Ankon scored 17 runs off 35 balls, and Sarkar made 45 runs off 89 balls before getting out. Their dismissals left Bangladesh under severe pressure.
All five of Bangladesh’s wickets have fallen to West Indies spinners. Notably, Akil Hossain and Alick Athanaze claimed two wickets each, emerging as the most influential bowlers for their team.
Bangladesh now faces the challenge of strengthening its innings against spin, just as in previous matches, where spin has proven difficult for the team to counter.
