Following the devastating fire at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on October 18, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held an urgent meeting to ensure the rapid clearance of imported goods.
On Monday, October 20, a delegation led by BGMEA Director Faisal Samad met with the Commissioner of Dhaka Custom House. Subsequently, an emergency meeting was held in the Custom House conference room with the participation of the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant stakeholders.
During the meeting, the Commissioner urged importers and their representatives (C&F agents) to prepare all necessary documentation before the goods arrive at the port and, if possible, ensure same-day delivery. He further emphasized that due to insufficient storage and security, imported goods must be cleared within 24 to 48 hours.
To facilitate smooth delivery, two focal point officers have been appointed: Kamrul Hasan, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Custom House, and Firoz Salauddin, Manager (Import Operations) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Additionally, the names of officials responsible for assisting BGMEA members were announced: Senior Assistant Secretary Sajjad Mahmud and Assistant Secretary Md. Bashirullah.
BGMEA’s Acting Secretary, Major (Retd.) Saiful Islam, stated in the issued notice that in response to the fire-related crisis, all relevant agencies are coordinating closely to ensure rapid cargo clearance.
