Staff Report: PNN
Former Australian cricket star David Warner is set to plead guilty to a drink-driving charge, his lawyer confirmed on Thursday after a court hearing in Sydney.
Court sources said the former opener was allegedly caught driving with double the legal alcohol limit in Sydney in April. Police conducted a routine roadside breath test, during which Warner’s behaviour was found to be suspicious, leading to further testing. The results later confirmed he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Following the incident, he was taken into custody at a police station. However, Warner did not appear in court in person during the hearing.
His lawyer Bobby Hill told reporters that his client is prepared to accept responsibility for his mistake. He said that everyone can make wrong decisions at some point in life, but taking responsibility is important.
He further added that regardless of profession or identity, driving under the influence is equally dangerous for everyone. Anyone can end up in such a situation if they misjudge their ability.
According to local media, Warner has not yet officially submitted a formal plea in court. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 24.
Since retiring from international cricket, Warner has been involved in domestic T20 leagues. However, this legal issue off the field has created new controversy in the final phase of his career.
