Ammonia Gas Leak from Ice Plant in Mahipur, Patuakhali Causes 20 to Fall Ill, 5 Hospitalized

At least 20 people fell ill after ammonia gas leaked from the compressor pipe of the Gazi Ice Plant in Mahipur, Patuakhali's fish port area. The incident occurred late on Wednesday night (October 22).

According to local sources, a leak occurred in the compressor pipe outside the ice plant at some point during the night. The gas quickly spread, causing a foul odor and respiratory distress among nearby people. Upon receiving the news, fire service personnel arrived at the scene and rescued five fishermen in critical condition, taking them to Kalapara Hospital for treatment.

Fire service personnel reported that ammonia gas is highly dangerous and can cause severe respiratory issues. Several individuals became ill due to exposure to the gas.

Abul Hossain, the acting station officer of Kalapara Fire Service, said, "The situation worsened rapidly due to the spread of ammonia gas. We quickly launched a rescue operation and hospitalized the affected individuals."

Additionally, fire service sources indicated that similar accidents have occurred at other ice plants in Mahipur and Alipur before. The police and administration have begun an investigation into the incident.
