At least five people have died and one is in critical condition on life support at Abu Naser Hospital after allegedly consuming toxic homemade liquor (locally known as Bangla Mod) in the Boyra Puja Khola Mor area under Sonadanga police station in Khulna.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, a group of individuals consumed a large quantity of the liquor together on Friday night. By Saturday morning, news of their deaths began to spread. It is suspected that the liquor was laced with toxic substances, leading to the fatal incident.

Identities of the deceased:

  1. Babu (50), son of Abdur Rob, resident of Serer Mor, Boyra, Sonadanga, Khulna.

  2. Sabu (60), son of Abdus Samad, resident of Madhyapara, Boyra, Khalishpur, Khulna.

  3. Gautam Kumar Biswas (47), son of Kalipada, resident of Junction Road, Boyra, Khalishpur, Khulna.

In addition, Sonu (58), father's name unknown, from Daspara, Boyra, Khalishpur, is currently on life support at Abu Naser Hospital.

Locals allege that illegal liquor trade has been ongoing in the Boyra area and nearby locations for a long time. Despite several complaints to the authorities, no effective action has been taken. The incident has caused widespread panic and unrest in the community.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonadanga Police Station said, “The incident is under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the victims died after consuming toxic liquor. Efforts are underway to trace the source and sellers of the contaminated alcohol.”

A senior official of Khulna Metropolitan Police stated that the bodies have been sent for autopsy, and liquor samples will be tested. He assured that those involved in the illegal liquor trade will be brought to justice swiftly.

Meanwhile, doctors have warned that toxic liquor can cause immediate damage to the liver and kidneys, leading to death within hours. Locals have been urged to avoid consuming unsafe and unregulated liquor.
