Youth Killed Over Road Construction Dispute in Cumilla Allegedly

A man named Delwar Hossain has allegedly been hacked to death over a dispute regarding road construction in Meghna upazila of Cumilla. The incident took place late Friday night in Tulatuli village. The deceased was 38 years old.

According to police and local sources, there had been a long-standing dispute over constructing a road through the middle of land owned by Delwar’s elder brother Abdul Baten. It is alleged that local Union Parishad member and Union Jubo League general secretary Md. Nasir was supervising the road construction.

The family claims that although Abdul Baten did not object to the road construction, he requested that the road be built along one side instead of through the middle of the land. This led to tension between the two sides. Although attempts were made locally to resolve the issue, the dispute was not fully settled.

Family members alleged that at around 12:30 am on Friday night, Delwar was attacked while going from his old house to his new house. They said several people who were lying in wait attacked him with sharp weapons.

He was rescued in a critically injured condition and taken to Meghna Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Chandpur Union Jubo Dal president Sirajul Islam Babu claimed that the killing originated from the land dispute. He said complaints had also been submitted to the local administration.

Mousumi Akhtar said that a written complaint regarding the land issue was received. Later, a project implementation officer was sent to the site, and preliminary findings suggested that the road was not actually being constructed through the complainant’s land.

Meghna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Aminul Islam said that police visited the scene after receiving the news. The situation is now under control. Legal action will be taken after the body is brought from Dhaka.

The incident has created widespread sensation in the area. Local residents have demanded the immediate arrest and trial of those involved.
