Police have identified a woman whose dismembered and partially decomposed body was recovered from a suitcase and a sack beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Joydebpur, Gazipur. According to the investigation, the woman was allegedly murdered following a dispute over marriage after being in a five-year romantic relationship with the main accused.

The deceased was identified as Dolly Akter, 30, daughter of Badsha Mia of Paharpabijan village in Muktagachha police station area of Mymensingh. She worked as a sewing operator at a garment factory in the Bagher Bazar area of Gazipur.

The information was disclosed at a press conference held at the Gazipur district office of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) at around 10:30am on Monday (September 14).

According to the PBI, three people have been arrested in connection with the murder: Dolly’s lover Mission Islam, 22, his mother Banu Akter, 43, and Mission’s friend Mizanur Rahman Milton, 24. The investigating agency said all three accused have given confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

According to police, Dolly met Mission Islam around five years ago through their jobs at a garment factory. Their acquaintance eventually developed into a romantic relationship. Recently, however, disputes arose between the two over marriage. Investigators say Dolly went to Mission’s house on the night of September 8, where she was allegedly murdered.

According to the PBI, after staying in the same room at night, Mission allegedly gave Dolly sleeping pills and then strangled her with a lungi and pillow. The body was subsequently hidden underneath a wooden bed. The next morning, Mission’s mother Banu Akter allegedly learned about the incident and became involved in a plan to dispose of the body, investigators said.

When they tried to place the body inside a suitcase, they reportedly faced difficulties. The body was then cut into two pieces from the waist using a sharp machete and a blade. One part of the body was placed inside the suitcase, while the other was put into a sack.

Mission then called his friend Milton. According to the PBI, the three transported the suitcase and sack in an auto-rickshaw and threw them into a canal from a bridge in the Bhabanipur area.

Police Superintendent Md Rakibul Akter said the PBI Gazipur launched a shadow investigation on its own initiative after receiving information about the recovery of the body. With the assistance of information technology, investigators identified the deceased and also traced those allegedly involved in the murder.

During the investigation, the three suspects were arrested. Police also recovered the machete allegedly used in the murder, Dolly’s identification card, mobile phone and shoes.

Dolly’s brother Sohel filed a murder case at Joydebpur Police Station on September 12. After the PBI was assigned responsibility for investigating the case, investigators conducted an operation and arrested the three suspects.

Investigation Officer Police Inspector Md Mostafizur Rahman said investigators were examining whether anyone else was involved in the murder. Other relevant information was also being verified as part of the investigation.

Earlier, on the afternoon of September 11, local residents spotted a black suitcase beneath a culvert beside a multi-storey building near Bhabanipur Fakira Garments in the Memberbari area of Gazipur Sadar. Upon receiving the information, Joydebpur police went to the scene and opened the suitcase, where they recovered one part of a woman’s dismembered and partially decomposed body.

Police later conducted a search of the surrounding area and recovered the other part of the body from inside a sack. At that time, the identity of the deceased could not be confirmed. Following several days of investigation, the PBI said it had identified the woman and uncovered the circumstances surrounding the murder.
