On Monday, the United Nations Security Council passed a U.S. draft resolution aimed at turning the current fragile peace in Gaza into a more sustainable peace and rebuilding the conflict-ravaged region.
The 15-member council passed the proposal with 13 votes in favor and none against. Russia and China abstained but did not exercise their vetoes.
The proposal was designed to give international recognition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan. Some parts of it had already formed the basis of a peace agreement implemented last month in Gaza’s Jinuk region. Trump praised the vote on social media, writing: “Congratulations to the world for the extraordinary UN Security Council vote, which, under my leadership, has established the ‘Board of Peace,’ including the world’s most powerful and respected leaders.”
The resolution allows for the establishment of a temporary administrative authority in Gaza as a “Board of Peace” and an interim international stabilization force (ISF). U.S. Ambassador Michael Waltz stated that the force would ensure security in Gaza with participation from Muslim-majority countries, monitor demilitarization, protect civilians, and provide aid via safe corridors.
Ambassador Waltz warned before the vote, “Voting ‘no’ on this proposal is a vote to return to war.”
Despite passing, many questions remain regarding its implementation. The draft does not clearly specify steps and details, posing a significant challenge for the international community.
