Novak Djokovic has experienced countless memorable battles on Centre Court, but this time it was Jannik Sinner who dominated the iconic venue. With a brilliant display of controlled tennis, the world number one defeated the Serbian legend in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon final.
In Friday’s second semi-final, Sinner defeated 39-year-old Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The match lasted just two hours and 20 minutes, with the Italian star giving his opponent very few opportunities. The victory secured Sinner’s place in the Wimbledon final for the second consecutive year as the defending champion.
Sinner will now face French Open champion Alexander Zverev in the title clash. The meeting between the two in-form players is already being considered one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.
Sinner’s performance at Wimbledon this year has been exceptional. Although he needed four sets to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening round, he has not dropped a set since then. He maintained that dominance in the semi-final, taking control from the very beginning.
In the first set, Sinner broke Djokovic’s serve in the ninth game and then held his own serve to secure the advantage. Djokovic attempted to fight back in the second set, but Sinner once again broke his serve in the seventh game and strengthened his control over the match.
At the start of the third set, Sinner earned another break and never looked back. He produced 40 winners throughout the match and allowed Djokovic only one break-point opportunity, which he successfully saved.
With this victory, the 24-year-old Sinner has reached the seventh Grand Slam final of his career. A win in the final would give him his fifth major title. It would also provide him with an opportunity to claim a 10th consecutive victory over German star Zverev, having won their previous nine encounters.
For Djokovic, it was another disappointing chapter. His dream of winning a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title remains unfulfilled. Since winning the 2023 US Open, Djokovic has failed to capture another major trophy and has now lost six Grand Slam semi-finals, four of them against Sinner.
Djokovic will turn 40 when he returns to Wimbledon next year, making it increasingly difficult for him to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles.
Meanwhile, Sinner enters the final full of confidence. After suffering an unexpected defeat at the French Open, he has made a strong comeback at the All England Club, and many analysts consider him the favorite heading into the championship match.
