Hollywood actor Tom Cruise recently received an Honorary Oscar at the 16th Governor Awards held in California. The award was presented by world-renowned director Alejandro González Iñárritu. This is one of the highest honors of Cruise’s four-decade career, despite being nominated for an Oscar four times without winning a competitive award.
Many celebrities attended the event. Choreographer and actress Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas also received this honor this year. Singer and human rights activist Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, though she could not attend due to health reasons.
After receiving the award, Tom Cruise emotionally stated, “Cinema has taken me around the world. It has taught me to respect different cultures and perspectives. No matter where we come from, the joy, tears, and hope we share in a theater is the power of cinema. Film is not just my profession; it is my identity.”
He recalled his childhood, saying, “I fell in love with cinema as a child. When the projector light exploded on the screen in the dark, it felt like another vast world beyond the known world was opening. That light inspired curiosity, courage, the desire to learn, the urge to understand humanity, and the passion to tell stories.” He added, “That beam of light from my childhood showed me that it is possible to go beyond your boundaries.”
The Governor Awards red carpet was star-studded, with attendees including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B. Jordan, Sydney Sweeney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, and Emma Stone.
Currently, Tom Cruise is shooting for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s new film, whose title has not yet been finalized.
