Ahead of the verdict in the case against former autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina and three others, filed over crimes against humanity and her removal from power during the July uprising, law enforcement authorities have stepped up security at Dhaka’s entry points to prevent unrest or sabotage.
Since Monday morning (17 November), additional security personnel have been deployed at key points along the Dhaka-Mawa Elevated Expressway. Checkpoints have been set up at Nimtola, Kuchiamora, Hasara, and other critical junctions, where vehicles are stopped, documents verified, and passengers’ identities confirmed. Suspicious movements are being thoroughly investigated.
A senior law enforcement official said, “Various groups may attempt sabotage around the verdict. Maximum precaution has been taken. Visible patrolling and drone surveillance are in place along the highway.”
OC Mohammad Abu Bakr of Sirajdikhan Thana added, “The elevated expressway is a major transport route in southwest Dhaka. Even a minor incident could create significant disruption, so we are following a ‘zero tolerance’ policy.”
He confirmed no untoward incidents have been reported so far, and the heightened security will remain in effect until after the verdict, extended if necessary. Authorities believe the strict monitoring has significantly reduced the risk of sabotage, but personnel will remain on high alert until normalcy returns.
