Three Traders Fined Tk 70,000 During Mobile Court Drive in Chandpur

A mobile court has conducted an operation at Baburhat Market in Chandpur city over allegations of selling banned polythene bags in violation of environmental regulations. During the drive, a large quantity of banned polythene bags was seized, and three traders were fined a total of Tk 70,000.

The operation was conducted on Tuesday (July 21) at several shops selling plastic products in the market through a joint initiative of the Department of Environment and the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. During the raid, teams searched different shops and recovered banned polythene bags, which were later confiscated.

The mobile court was led by Nahid Iqbal, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and Executive Magistrate. He said that the production, storage, sale, and use of banned polythene bags are punishable offences under the law as they are extremely harmful to the environment. Despite this, some traders had continued selling such products by violating government regulations. Legal action was taken against them based on complaints.

During the operation, trader Mahabub was fined Tk 20,000, Fakhruddin Tk 30,000, and Md. Sabbir Tk 20,000 for selling banned polythene bags. A total of Tk 70,000 was collected from them immediately as penalties.

Officials involved with the mobile court said such drives will continue regularly to implement government directives for environmental protection. Traders were also urged to use environmentally friendly alternatives instead of banned polythene products.

The local administration hopes that continuous monitoring and enforcement of the law will reduce the use of banned polythene in markets and create a positive impact on environmental conservation.
