Staff Report: PNN

Among the eight teams that have qualified for the Super Eight stage of the Cricket World Cup, seven have already secured their spots: West Indies, India, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe. The eighth and final team will be determined in the match between Pakistan and Namibia tomorrow.

As it stands, barring any unforeseen incidents, Pakistan is expected to take the last spot in the Super Eight. Even if the match at Colombo’s SSC Ground is abandoned, Pakistan will advance. If Pakistan loses, the U.S. could enter the Super Eight for the second consecutive time. The Netherlands also has a theoretical chance, but they would need to defeat India by a significant margin in the next match if Pakistan loses.

The Super Eight teams will be divided into two groups. Group 1 includes India (A1), Zimbabwe (B1), West Indies (C2), and South Africa (D2). Group 2 includes England (C1), New Zealand (D1), Pakistan/U.S./Netherlands (A2), and Sri Lanka (B2).

The ICC had pre-designated eight teams as seeded teams for the Super Eight stage. Regardless of their initial group positions in the first round, their Super Eight group placement was predetermined. If a seeded team is eliminated, their place is filled by the next qualifying team. For example, Zimbabwe took the spot of the seeded team Australia (B1). If Pakistan is eliminated, the U.S. will occupy the A2 position.

Under the Super Eight format, points from the first round do not carry over. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the top team from Group 1 plays the second team from Group 2, while the top team from Group 2 plays the second team from Group 1.

Bangladeshi cricket fans are now watching the Pakistan-Namibia match closely, as it will determine the final Super Eight lineup.
