Sunil Grover Charms Audience with Acting, Not Mere Mimicry, in Aamir Khan Impression

In a Netflix episode of the popular show The Great Indian Kapil Show, Sunil Grover impersonated Bollywood star Aamir Khan, delivering a performance that went viral on social media. Fans praised his acting, and Aamir Khan himself commended it.

In a video interview, Aamir Khan said his impersonation should not be called mimicry. “It wasn’t mimicry; it was pure acting. It felt like I was sitting on screen myself. I laughed so hard watching the clip that I could barely breathe,” he said. He added that the performance contained no mockery, only pure joy.

During the episode, guest actors Kartik Aryan and Ananya Panday witnessed Grover’s precise replication of Aamir Khan’s speech, walk, style of dress, eye expressions, and interactions with paparazzi. He named his character ‘19–20 Aamir,’ which became a source of laughter for the audience.

Online viewers flooded social media with praise, noting that the performance was not mere imitation but acting that entered the character’s essence. Sunil Grover has previously received similar acclaim, such as impersonating Amitabh Bachchan on the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Kapil Sharma originally launched the show on television in 2014. Since 2024, it has moved to an OTT platform with a new name, The Great Indian Kapil Show, airing new episodes every Saturday. Grover reportedly earns significant remuneration for each episode. Analysts note that his greatest strength is portraying characters without mocking or insulting them, combining observation and acting skills.
