Meghmala Bosu, president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union’s Dhaka University branch, apologized on social media for using a controversial ‘Pakistani slogan.’ In a Facebook post late Tuesday night, he admitted that his statement was politically inappropriate.

Recently, tensions flared among various student organizations over the ‘36 July: We Will Not Stop’ program organized by Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka University. The event faced heavy criticism after images of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders convicted of war crimes were displayed in an exhibition at the TSC premises. Leftist and student groups affiliated with the Awami League sharply condemned the exhibition. Subsequently, the university administration ordered the removal of the controversial displays.

Amid this, Meghmala Bosu was accused of chanting a Pakistan-oriented slogan involving Shibir’s central publication secretary, Sadik Qayem. Later, in his Facebook post, he wrote,
“The slogan ‘Sadik Qayem Pakistani’ was politically incorrect. It was wrong of me to say it. It was beneath me. In the future, I will refrain from such slogans involving this generation of Shibir leaders. Comrades should also stay aware. As for the rest, well done and I will do more.”

His statement received mixed reactions in the student political arena. While some viewed it as a positive act of self-criticism, many others argued that it reflected a tendency to avoid responsibility and was insufficient for establishing political integrity.

Analysts believe that the controversy surrounding Shibir’s program is no longer just about the exhibition, but also raises questions about the credibility and political decorum of student organizations.

This incident is expected to further heat up the political atmosphere on Dhaka University’s campus.
