Student Alleges Sexual Harassment at BRAC University; Frustration Over Slow Administrative Response

A female student has accused Intisar Alam, a teacher at BRAC University and an Associate Professor in the Marketing Department of Dhaka University, of sexual harassment. The student filed the complaint on September 20, but she has expressed frustration as the university administration has yet to take visible action.

According to the student, during an exam, the teacher seized her personal phone and, under the pretext of explaining the exam rules, touched her in sensitive areas. She claims the incident left her mentally distressed. In addition to filing a complaint with the university, the student has submitted a General Diary (GD) at the police station and mentioned CCTV footage as evidence.

Shahinuazzaman, a lawyer from the Legal and Mediation Center, stated that this is not just a harassment case but a criminal offense. He added, “When such incidents occur in educational institutions, especially in examination rooms, it is not only a moral failure but also a serious human rights violation.”

Another student involved, Nayrita Priyadarshini Haldar, also accused the teacher of extremely inappropriate behavior and an unacceptable attitude toward female students. She further alleged that the teacher promised higher marks in class in exchange for personal favors.

Fatious Fahmid, Deputy Manager of BRAC University, said, “BRAC University takes allegations of sexual harassment very seriously. Upon receiving the complaint, it was immediately forwarded to the relevant committee for investigation. Comments cannot be made until the investigation is complete. The university is committed to taking appropriate measures through a fair and transparent process.”

Students hope that the authorities will take exemplary action quickly and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
