PNN Staff Report
Shooting, once a symbol of pride for Bangladesh in international sports, is now embroiled in controversy and allegations. Joint General Secretary of the Shooting Federation, G.M. Haider Sajjad, faces accusations of sexual harassment, creating an uncomfortable situation.
Former female athletes recently held a human chain in protest. Although the National Sports Council (NSC) and Ministry of Youth and Sports were informed, the Shooting Sports Federation initially denied the allegations, claiming no direct complaints had been received from female shooters.
However, NSC sources stated that an investigative committee recommended a 10-year ban on Sajjad, after which he was relieved from NSC. Despite this, allegations suggest he still regularly attends the Shooting Federation and participates in activities.
Shooting Federation General Secretary Aleya Ferdous said in a press conference that they had not received any official complaint against Sajjad from NSC. She claimed some shooters are spreading misleading and false information. She provided a four-page written statement supporting her claim.
When questioned about Sajjad’s presence, she stated he had come to clarify some documents. Further decisions on this matter will be taken in the next meeting.
On the day Sajjad was removed from NSC, female shooter Kamrun Nahar Kali was penalized by the Federation. The reason was not clearly stated; sometimes it was attributed to “Code of Conduct” or “disciplinary violations.” Aleya Ferdous mentioned that Kali did not follow practice schedules and wanted personal time in the camp, affecting others.
The press conference left many questions unanswered. The Federation lacks transparency in decision-making, and the real authority within it remains unclear. Officials speaking in support of Sajjad further complicated the matter.
Observers believe the controversy is not limited to one official’s allegations but raises broader questions about accountability, ethics, and the safety of athletes in Bangladesh’s shooting administration.
