PNN News Desk | Chittagong:
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin has stated that there are certain limitations within the Election Commission regarding the allocation of the Shapla symbol, but the National Citizen Party (NCP) understands this well. He expressed hope that the party would contribute to creating an environment for participatory elections without obstructing the path of democracy.
The CEC spoke to the media after a closed-door meeting held at the Chittagong Circuit House on Sunday. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioners of Chittagong Division, representatives of law enforcement agencies, and election-related officials.
CEC Nasir Uddin said, "We believe that NCP will contribute to the progress of democracy. Their leaders were at the forefront of the movement to restore democracy during the 2024 uprising. Therefore, I am confident that they will continue to contribute to the continuity of democracy."
Explaining the reason for not allocating the Shapla symbol, he said, "The Election Commission cannot allocate any symbol outside the prescribed list of symbols. Since the Shapla symbol is not in the list, it was not allocated. To date, we have not allocated any symbol to a party outside the list."
However, the CEC stated that there is no obstacle to adding new symbols to the list. He said, "If necessary, the symbol list can be reviewed in the future; there is no issue with that."
Regarding challenges during the election period, the CEC said, "The biggest challenge is to maintain law and order before, during, and after the election. However, we are committed—this time, there will be no secret ballots or elections held in the dark of night. Everything will be transparent and open."
On the role of the media, he urged, "During the elections, do not broadcast any news without verification. Information-based reporting will help keep the election fair."
The CEC further said, "Our goal is to conduct a transparent, accountable, and participatory election. Achieving this goal requires the cooperation of all parties."
