Due to political instability, Shakib Al Hasan has been unable to return to Bangladesh for over a year. During this period, he has primarily been participating in various franchise leagues abroad. While in the United States, he has occasionally played in local matches with amateur cricketers, but this time, for the first time, he has officially registered to play in the U.S. Minor League Cricket.
The Bangladesh-owned team, Atlanta Fires, has included Shakib in their squad through a wild card entry. As an international cricketer, he will play under the overseas player quota. Previously, Nasir Hossain also played for the same team under this quota. Although Minor League Cricket has not yet received full ICC approval, it is considered a developmental step toward Major League Cricket.
Shakib, who is currently in the United States with his family, has a U.S. citizen wife, although he has not taken citizenship himself. After participating in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the former world-class all-rounder from Bangladesh will now step onto the Minor League stage during his off-season.
Experts believe that his participation is not only significant for Shakib personally but also represents a major boost for the cricketing landscape in the United States.
