Rajshahi University (RU) is set to introduce a coding system for evaluating examination answer scripts. The system will be implemented gradually across different departments from the 2025-26 academic year. According to the university administration, the system will allow answer scripts to be evaluated while keeping the identities of examinees confidential.
The programme will be formally inaugurated on Tuesday (September 15), when coded answer scripts and necessary examination materials will be handed over to representatives of six university departments as part of the first phase.
The matter was confirmed by Professor Dr Md Hasnat Kabir, acting director and Controller of Examinations at the university.
According to university administration sources, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Faridul Islam will hand over the coded answer scripts and necessary materials prepared for examinations under the new system to representatives of the six departments on Tuesday.
The departments initially being brought under the system are Islamic History and Culture, Political Science, Social Work, Statistics, Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Computer Science and Engineering.
Officials concerned said the coding system is being introduced to increase neutrality and transparency in the evaluation of examination answer scripts.
Under the system, the student's name or identity will not be directly visible on the answer script. Instead, a specific code will be used. As a result, examiners will not be able to identify the examinee while evaluating the script.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Faridul Islam said the university had taken the initiative to introduce a coding system for evaluating examination answer scripts. He said coded answer scripts have already been prepared for all departments of the university.
He said coded answer scripts would be supplied to departments according to their examination schedules as their examinations are held in phases. Six departments have already informed the university of their examination dates, which is why the prepared answer scripts for those departments will be supplied on Tuesday.
According to the vice-chancellor, the formal implementation of the coding system for examination script evaluation at Rajshahi University will begin with the distribution of answer scripts to the six departments.
The university administration expects the new system to further increase transparency and impartiality in the evaluation of examination answer scripts.
The authorities also believe the system will strengthen students' confidence in the process of preparing examination results. The coding system will gradually be introduced in examinations conducted by other departments as well.
