In a thrilling, chaotic, and dramatic final, Senegal defeated host Morocco to win the Africa Cup of Nations. They secured victory with a single goal in extra time, winning 1–0.

The final moments at Morocco’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium sparked major controversy. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded in favor of Morocco, prompting strong protests from the Senegal team. At one point, following instructions from coach Papé Bouba Diop, the Senegal players briefly left the field, halting the game. Later, at the request of team captain and veteran forward Sadio Mané, the players returned to the field.

Back on the pitch, Morocco’s star midfielder Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty. However, Senegal’s goalkeeper Édouard Mendy easily saved the chip shot, changing the momentum of the match.

In the fourth minute of extra time, a decisive moment arrived. Sadio Mané took possession in midfield and initiated an attack. Idrissa Gana Gueye passed the ball to Pape Gueye, who scored a spectacular goal in the box. Morocco’s captain Achraf Hakimi could not stop the shot, and the ball found the net.

Earlier, a Senegal goal had been disallowed, causing frustration. From a corner, Ismaïla Sarr’s header hit the post and rebounded into the goal, but it was ruled a foul, further angering Senegal’s camp.

The Moroccan team was left devastated by the loss. Late in the game, Naïf Aguerd’s header hit the crossbar, eliminating Morocco’s last chance to equalize. Many spectators left the stadium before the final whistle due to cold and rainy conditions.

With this victory, Senegal has won the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time in three editions. After their first championship in 2022, this marks another historic achievement. Meanwhile, Morocco’s trophy drought continues—almost fifty years since their last triumph.

After the match, Pape Gueye, who scored the winning goal, said, “It was a very tough match. We fought until the end, and that brought us the victory.” Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui stated, “Even with the late penalty, losing the trophy is extremely painful for our people.”

Due to the controversial events, there may be investigations regarding refereeing decisions, the Senegal team’s behavior, and the organizers’ management. Nevertheless, despite all the drama, the trophy ultimately went to Senegal.
