Arsenal and Atlético Madrid, both dreaming of reaching the Champions League final after a long gap, faced each other in the first leg of the semi-final and the match ended in a 1–1 draw. As a result, the race to reach the final remains completely open.

On Wednesday (April 30) night at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, the hosts Atlético had a slight edge in ball possession and attacks, but both teams were equal in terms of goals. Atlético had around 52 percent possession and created several attacks, but Arsenal’s defense remained solid.

In the first half, during a series of attacks and counterattacks, Arsenal went ahead in the 44th minute through a penalty. Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres calmly converted the spot kick to give his team the lead.

After the break, Atlético tried to fight back. In the 56th minute, they were awarded a penalty, which Argentine forward Julián Álvarez successfully converted to level the score. This was his 10th goal of the current season.

After that, both teams created several chances, but no further goals were scored. Atlético’s Antoine Griezmann missed or failed to convert several opportunities. On the other hand, Arsenal were denied a possible penalty late in the match after VAR review overturned the decision.

The 1–1 draw means the equation for reaching the final now depends on the second leg. The return match will be held on Tuesday at Emirates Stadium in London, where it will be decided which team qualifies for the final.

The performances of both teams clearly show that the battle for the final is wide open, and the second leg is expected to be highly competitive.
