U.S. President Donald Trump announced he has signed a bill mandating the release of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump made the announcement Wednesday night on social media. The move follows months of pressure on his administration to disclose Epstein’s crimes and connections to high-profile figures in politics, business, and entertainment.
Earlier, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the administration “will follow the law properly” and ensure “maximum transparency.”
The new law, the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed Congress with broad bipartisan support and directs the Department of Justice to release all unclassified Epstein-related documents in a searchable and downloadable format within 30 days.
Child sexual abuse documents, victim identities, or ongoing investigation/national security/external policy information may be withheld. However, documents cannot be blocked for reasons of “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”
Although thousands of documents have already been released, a judge said the total amounts to about 100,000 pages.
Trump claimed Epstein was a “lifelong Democrat” and named high-profile Democrats allegedly linked to Epstein, including former President Bill Clinton and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers. Critics note that none of these political figures have been charged. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019.
Many critics have questioned whether the administration will ensure full transparency. Democratic Senator Adam Schiff said he is “not fully confident” the law will be implemented, warning, “Looking at the past, we may see further neglect, cover-ups, and vague explanations.”
