Staff Reporter | PNN:
After the student-led uprising and the fall of the Awami League government, the political landscape of the country has shifted. In this context, leaders and activists of the BNP, who have been out of power for 18 years, have been energized and have started preparations for the 13th national parliamentary election. Even before the election schedule is announced, the party is taking initial steps to finalize solo candidates in at least 70% of the 300 constituencies.
BNP leaders have begun evaluating candidates’ popularity on the ground. Constituency-based data is being collected from local leaders and various party wings. Senior party leaders believe that announcing solo candidates after the schedule is released may create conflicts and divisions over nominations. Therefore, by announcing solo candidates in most constituencies in advance, they aim to consolidate the party’s position.
Policymakers have stated that the party wants to provide more opportunities to young candidates. In remaining constituencies, nominations may be decided considering alliances or understandings. The BNP’s Standing Committee will oversee the nomination process, and the final decisions will be made by the Parliamentary Board.
Meanwhile, the party’s highest policy-making forum has decided to reach voters at their homes through public engagement activities before the election. BNP hopes this initiative will strengthen their position in the electoral arena and attract public attention toward the elections.
