A strong earthquake felt across Bangladesh on Friday (21 November) at 10:38 am has so far claimed six lives. Authorities confirmed three deaths in Dhaka, one child in Narayanganj, and two people in Narsingdi. Numerous people were injured and several buildings, shops, and structures sustained cracks.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, originating from Narsingdi at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, which caused widespread tremors in different parts of the country.
The tremors shook buildings in Dhaka, as well as in Gopalganj, Rangpur, Satkhira, Comilla, Rajshahi, Kurigram, Sylhet, and Feni. The earthquake was also felt in northeast India, according to NDTV.
In Banshal, Dhaka, the railing of a five-story building collapsed, killing three pedestrians. The Banshal police officer-in-charge reported that the railing suddenly gave way around 11:30 am. CCTV footage showed people falling to the ground as the railing collapsed, with others rushing to help.
Additionally, in Malita village of Palash Upazila, the wall of a mud house collapsed, killing a 75-year-old elderly man.
