A housewife named Rigan Akter Mim (26) was killed during a robbery at a house in Shahrasti Upazila of Chandpur late at night. Another woman from the same family was injured in the incident.
The horrifying incident has created panic in the area. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are working to identify those involved in the crime.
The robbery took place at around 2:30 am on Tuesday night (July 14) at Bepari Bari in Battala village under Ward No. 9 of Shahrasti Municipality.
The deceased Mim was the wife of Saiful Islam Rony, son of late Selim Bepari. She was the mother of a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter and a four-month-old son. Her husband was staying in Dhaka for work at the time of the incident. Another family member, Iftekhar Rifat, was also in Dhaka.
At the house were elderly family member Nurul Islam, injured housewife Kazi Sumaiya Akter, and several children.
The injured Sumaiya Akter said that while she was sleeping with her child, two masked men entered her room and threatened her with knives, demanding gold ornaments and valuables. When she told them to take the items from the cupboard, the criminals tied her hands with a scarf and hit her on the head with a hammer.
She said the robbers later took her earrings, a ring, and other gold ornaments before entering the adjacent room. After some time, she heard her elder sister-in-law crying from the next room but could not help because she was tied up.
Family elder Nurul Islam said he had locked the main gate of the house before going to sleep. After waking up due to screams, he found that the lock was missing from the gate. Later, the lock was found lying outside the house intact, raising further questions about the incident.
Neighbour Anwar Hossain said he rushed to the house after hearing screams and heard sounds of a struggle inside. When there was no response, he informed others nearby. Later, an announcement was made through the local mosque’s microphone, and residents surrounded the house.
When people entered the house, they first rescued Sumaiya, who was found tied up. Later, Mim was found unconscious in the next room with a scarf wrapped around her neck. Despite attempts by locals to revive her, she did not respond. Doctors later declared her dead.
After the news spread, relatives of the victim rushed to the house and the family was overwhelmed with grief.
Senior Assistant Police Superintendent (Kachua Circle) Md. Abdul Hai Chowdhury and Shahrasti Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Mahbubur Rahman visited the spot. Police collected evidence from the scene and began preparations to send the body for autopsy.
