Police have put up a barricade on the road in Bakshibazar, Dhaka, to prevent leaders and activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir from entering the Government Madrasa-e-Alia. The barricade was set up on Bakshibazar Road after 12:00 noon on Saturday (August 8), as students moved towards the madrasa to enter the residential halls according to a previously announced programme.
It is learnt that police took position on the road when the madrasa’s “legitimate general students” and Chhatra Shibir leaders were heading towards the institution together with the intention of entering the residential halls. Later, a barricade was installed to control the movement of vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said that because of the barricade, no vehicles are being allowed to enter the madrasa premises through Bakshibazar Road. However, vehicles leaving the premises are not being prevented from doing so.
Meanwhile, members and activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were also seen inside the Madrasa-e-Alia premises at the same time. This has created a tense situation in the campus area.
Security has been strengthened in and around the madrasa due to the Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists’ programme concerning entry into the residential halls and the police presence on the road. Members of the law enforcement agencies are stationed at the scene to maintain control of the situation.
However, police have not yet provided any detailed statement regarding the installation of the barricade.
