Dhaka, 9 July 2025 — Bangladesh is ushering in a new era in the rehabilitation of patients suffering from paralysis and chronic neurological disorders. Beginning this Thursday (10 July), a limited-scale pilot project will be launched at the country’s first-ever Robotic Rehabilitation Center, located at the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Shahbagh, Dhaka.
Established with technical support from China, the center has been built to meet international standards and will offer state-of-the-art, technology-driven, and precise rehabilitation services.
According to official sources, the Chinese government has donated robotic equipment worth approximately BDT 200 million (20 crore taka) for this project. From a technological standpoint, this center is set to become one of South Asia’s most advanced robotic rehabilitation facilities, marking a revolutionary milestone in Bangladesh’s healthcare sector.
The center houses a total of 62 robots, including 22 AI-based (artificial intelligence) systems. These robots can provide highly accurate physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and long-term treatment tailored to each patient’s condition.
The BMU authorities have informed that, as part of the preparatory phase, a team of 7 biomedical engineers from China has already trained 27 Bangladeshi doctors and physiotherapists. Once this trained workforce gains adequate experience and operational systems are validated, the center will be launched on a full scale.
This robotic facility is designed to benefit patients undergoing complex rehabilitation processes due to conditions such as stroke, paralysis, neurological disorders, chronic pain, nerve injuries, frozen shoulder, and trauma-related complications.
Notably, those injured in the July student-people uprising who are still suffering from long-term complications will receive free robotic treatment at this center.
The center will not be limited to specialized cases only. In line with a structured policy framework, its services will gradually be made available to general patients as well. Efforts will also be made to keep treatment costs within patients’ financial reach.
The launch of this center will mark a transformative leap for Bangladesh into the realm of technology-integrated modern rehabilitation medicine. For the national healthcare system, this is not merely a technological advancement—it is a beacon of hope for people suffering from paralysis and chronic illnesses.
