The path has been cleared for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election to be held smoothly on September 9, following an order from the Supreme Court Appellate Division’s chamber judge. The court has upheld the previous High Court stay order.
The full seven-member Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, decided to maintain the chamber court’s order. As a result, legal obstacles to the election have been removed, according to lawyers.
According to the election schedule, a total of 471 candidates are contesting for central and hall union positions. For the Vice President (VP) post, 45 candidates are competing; for General Secretary (GS), 19; and for Assistant General Secretary (AGS), 25 candidates. Additionally, 17 candidates are contesting for the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary post, 11 for Common Room & Reading Room Secretary, 14 for International Secretary, 19 for Literature & Cultural Secretary, and 12 for Science & Technology Secretary.
The member positions have the highest competition, with a total of 217 candidates contesting for 13 seats.
Ahead of this year’s DUCSU election, voting preparations in the university area have been completed, and administrative measures have been taken to ensure a smooth voting process.
