Former U.S. President Donald Trump again stated that Greenland is “extremely important” to U.S. national security. He claimed Greenland’s strategic significance is immense to counter the growing influence of U.S. competitors in the Arctic.

On 4 January, speaking to journalists on Air Force One, Trump noted an increase in Russian and Chinese vessels near Greenland, posing a security threat. He emphasized that the U.S. requires Greenland for national security. The White House statement added that various policy options are being considered, including potential use of military force. Trump has previously discussed acquiring Greenland during his second term.

Greenland is currently an autonomous territory under Denmark. Since 1979, it has enjoyed self-rule, and since 2009, the right to vote for independence. The U.S. already maintains a military base on the island. However, both Greenland and Denmark have explicitly stated that the island is not for sale. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen remarked, “It is completely unreasonable to talk about acquiring Greenland.” Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed that international relations should be based on mutual respect and law, not threats or pressure.

Analysts note that Greenland’s geographical location is strategically crucial for the U.S., lying between North America and Europe, enabling missile early-warning systems, Arctic maritime surveillance, and access to rare minerals vital for modern technology and battery industries. While Trump’s claim suggests growing Russian-Chinese presence, maritime monitoring agencies report no abnormal activity by their vessels near Greenland.

With Arctic ice melting due to global warming, new shipping routes and resource extraction opportunities are emerging, prompting multiple countries—including the U.S., Russia, China, and Canada—to expand their influence, bringing Greenland into renewed international attention.
