The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has termed the court verdict reinstating the caretaker government system as “historic.” However, the party has demanded clarification on whether the caretaker government will be formed according to the 13th Amendment framework or following the July Charter guidelines. They noted that the government’s lack of clarity has raised new political questions.
NCP Secretary General Akhtar Hossain made the remarks at a press conference Thursday evening at the party’s temporary central office in Banglamotor.
He said, “The Awami League government had conducted one-sided elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024 after abolishing the caretaker system, opening the door to fascism in the country.” He claimed that the verdict reinstating the caretaker system freed the judiciary and the nation from past “shameful” decisions.
He added, “Now the question is whether the caretaker government will follow the previous judicial framework or be formed based on the July Charter. The government has not clarified this ambiguity.” Akhtar Hossain noted that reliance on the judiciary without court guidance under the 13th Amendment previously led the country into crises, such as the one–eleven situation. He emphasized, “The July Charter is the most suitable path for a peaceful transfer of power. There is no room for deviation.”
Akhtar Hossain said the Attorney General confirmed that the caretaker government would be formed according to the July Charter, but some political parties, including BNP, are advocating a return to the 13th Amendment framework.
He further stated, “All anti-fascist parties had reached consensus in the Election Commission on reinstating the caretaker government. Now it must be ensured that this consensus is free from any ambiguity.”
The press conference was attended by senior NCP joint convenor Samantha Sharmin, senior joint secretary Tasnim Jaras, and other central leaders.
