A BNP leader in Sylhet has died while undergoing treatment after being assaulted over a trivial dispute. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in Peer Bazar, Sadar Upazila, and the leader passed away on Thursday morning at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The deceased, Abdur Rahman (65), was the general secretary of Khadimpur Union BNP and a resident of Peer Bazar. According to local sources, the incident began when a youth, Suman Ahmed, was urinating by the roadside. Abdur Rahman happened to pass by, and an argument ensued, escalating into a clash.
Abdur Rahman’s son intervened and assaulted Suman, who retaliated by hitting Abdur Rahman on the head with a brick. Both were seriously injured and admitted to Osmani Hospital. Abdur Rahman later succumbed to his injuries. His body was handed over to the family after autopsy, and his funeral took place Thursday evening. Locals protested in Peer Bazar, demanding the swift arrest of the perpetrator.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said, “The accused, Suman, has fled from the hospital. Police are trying to apprehend him, and efforts have been made to calm the agitated public.”
