Staff Reporter | PNN:
Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), described the signing of the July Charter as merely a formality. He stated, “If it does not acquire legal validity, it will hold no value or meaning whatsoever.” He further emphasized, “We did not participate in this formality, and unless it is legally grounded, it amounts to public deception and mockery of the nation.”

Nahid Islam made these remarks at a press conference held on Saturday afternoon at NCP’s temporary office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. Party Secretary Akhtar Hossain and other senior leaders were also present.

Referring to the post-1990 mass uprising and the failure to maintain political consensus, Nahid Islam stressed the need for legal foundations for crucial matters such as constitutional amendments. He alleged that some political parties have compromised to maintain a fascist structure.

The NCP leader added, “Under pressure from the National Citizens Party, other political parties, and students and citizens, the government formed this Consensus Commission, and discussions are ongoing regarding the July Charter.” He cautioned that, similar to the betrayals after the 1990 uprising, such deception should not be repeated.

Nahid Islam further stated, “Until the July Charter acquires legal grounding, we consider this entire process purely ceremonial.” He added that if Professor Muhammad Yunus (Chief Advisor) issues an order to establish the charter’s legal validity, it will fulfill the aspirations of the people.

Party Secretary Akhtar Hossain said that the NCP is organizing street-level programs demanding the legal validation of the July Charter. He noted that, although many political parties were initially reluctant to give the charter legal backing, the NCP is now playing a key role in this process.

Meanwhile, during the July Charter signing event yesterday, clashes occurred between the ‘July Warriors’ and the police. The NCP has demanded justice for the incident and stated that parties that did not sign the charter initially will be able to sign it later.
