U.S. President Donald Trump, who is serving his second term and has pledged the “Drill, Baby, Drill” policy, told reporters on Friday that he found the proposal “interesting.” He also mentioned that he wanted to hear the opinion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the tunnel, but Zelensky reportedly expressed that he was not enthusiastic about the idea.
Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, added that the U.S. could participate in joint hydrocarbon projects with Russia and China, particularly for oil exploration in the Arctic region. He said, “Russia now sees opportunities for a Russia-China-U.S. joint project in the Arctic, especially in the energy sector.”
Furthermore, Dmitriev proposed involving Elon Musk’s The Boring Company in the project, tagging Musk on social media platform X, and describing the project as a “symbol of unity.” Dmitriev wrote to Musk: “Let’s build the future together,” envisioning the tunnel as the “Putin-Trump Tunnel”, connecting the U.S., Russia, and the broader Afro-Eurasian region.
Dmitriev noted that this proposal could be the first in history to connect two continents. Similar tunnel proposals were suggested in the late 19th century, and currently, establishing a direct link across the strait appears to be a realistic endeavor.
Amid this exciting moment in global geopolitics, discussions around this project could become a significant step among world leaders, potentially reshaping international collaboration between Russia and the United States.
