Nazrul Islam's Lament: Why is Bangladesh Constantly Falling Behind?

Nazrul Islam Khan, a standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has raised a poignant question about why Bangladesh still grapples with inconsistencies despite the immense sacrifices made by its people. He highlighted the numerous lives lost in pivotal movements, from the Language Movement and the 1971 Liberation War to the 1990 student uprising and the recent July-August mass uprising.

He made these remarks today (Saturday) as the chief guest at a seminar titled "'Cyber Security Ordinance: How Much Security Does It Provide?'" held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital. Organized by Nagorik Oikya (Citizens' Unity), the seminar saw Nazrul Islam Khan express his lament, asking, "How many more lives will the people of this country have to give and how much more will they have to fight?" He likened Bangladesh's progress to a game of "Snakes and Ladders," stating, "It's unacceptable that we repeatedly go far ahead like in Snakes and Ladders, then fall back down, and then try to advance again."

He also addressed the country's labor laws. Nazrul Islam Khan pointed out that despite labor laws mandating appointment letters for every worker, only 20-25 percent of workers in the country receive them. Consequently, they are deprived of gratuity and other benefits, which is a violation of labor law.

The BNP leader highlighted that despite laws existing for women, children, youth, and workers in the country, many remain ignorant about these laws and are unable to reap their benefits. He stated, "Those who represent political parties should explain the law to everyone and make them understand its benefits. If this is not done, the common people will remain in darkness."

Nazrul Islam Khan also questioned the accountability of law enforcement agencies. He asked, "Where is the provision for punishment for those who are responsible for enforcing the law if they make mistakes in its application, make intentional mistakes, and if they oppress the public by unjustly violating the law?" Finally, he emphasized that while laws exist to protect every institution, those in power who are responsible for enforcing these laws should be brought under accountability and responsibility.
