BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described the upcoming national election as a “crucial test” for the country’s future. According to him, the election will determine whether Bangladesh continues on a liberal democratic path or falls under extremist and anti-state forces.

Speaking at a discussion session at the Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka, on Tuesday, held on the occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said that deliberate misinformation is being spread ahead of the election. He claimed that BNP will achieve a landslide victory. He added, “Through this election, we aim to reach a democratic position where the people’s problems can be addressed and a new Bangladesh can be built.”

Regarding state reforms, he mentioned that many proposed reforms had already been raised by BNP. He referenced Khaleda Zia’s ‘Vision 2030’ announced in 2016 and later the 32-point agenda presented by BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as containing the blueprint.

He accused certain political forces of intentionally creating confusion, adding that BNP compromised for the greater national interest. However, issues where consensus was not reached were also being questioned, he said.

On religion and politics, Fakhrul said those who have historically not accepted Bangladesh’s independence and existence are now attempting to mislead people using religion. He emphasized that BNP is a religiously conscious party and that trust in Allah was incorporated in the constitution by President Ziaur Rahman.

He also mentioned that the actual support for those attempting to obstruct the election is limited and only the election will reveal the public’s choice. He stressed that people must choose a liberal and democratic path, which will determine whether Bangladesh progresses toward human welfare and democracy or toward extremist forces.

BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman, and other senior leaders also spoke at the session.
