National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari has called for building social resistance against extortionists in different localities. He said that when a significant portion of a working person's daily earnings is taken away in the name of extortion, the impact is felt not only in the individual's life but across the entire family.
He made the call in a post published on his Facebook account on Monday (September 14).
Nasiruddin wrote that a working person may earn Tk 500 after working throughout the day. That money is needed to cover a family's daily necessities, buy milk for children, purchase educational materials or pay for medicine for a sick family member. If Tk 200 to Tk 300 of that income is taken as extortion, one or more essential needs of the family remain unmet.
Highlighting the spread of extortion, he said people are being forced to pay money in various areas, ranging from running shops and businesses to operating vehicles and constructing houses. He alleged that extortion money often becomes a means of exercising political influence and demonstrating power.
The NCP leader also highlighted the humiliation and helplessness created among ordinary people by such activities. He claimed that extortion money is often distributed at different levels and eventually reaches politically influential individuals.
Nasiruddin Patwari said extortion is not simply a matter of taking money away from people. It is connected to the hard work of a working person, the needs of his family and the future of his children.
He called on everyone to unite against what he described as “new extortionists” and urged people to build social resistance in their respective communities.
According to him, ensuring an environment where a father or the earning member of a family can return home safely with the money earned through days of hard work should be one of the key social and state responsibilities.
