Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman made a special request to the Acting US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Tracy Ann Jacobson, seeking the reduction of the 35 percent tariff imposed by the United States and cooperation to ensure a fair election in Bangladesh.
Today, Monday afternoon, top leaders of Jamaat held a courtesy meeting with the US Ambassador at Jamaat’s central office in Mogbazar, Dhaka. The discussion covered topics including elections, reform activities, women’s empowerment, counter-terrorism, and regional security threats.
At a press briefing held after the meeting, Jamaat’s Deputy Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, “The Ambassador inquired about Bangladesh, especially the ongoing political reforms and preparations for the elections. We presented our viewpoint and also requested US assistance in organizing free and fair elections.”
He further stated that Jamaat expressed concern over the economic damage caused by the US-imposed tariff on the garments sector. A request to reduce the tariff to a manageable level has been sent to US President Donald Trump through the Ambassador.
Regarding women’s empowerment and terrorism, the US side sought Jamaat’s stance, to which Jamaat explained their position. Mutual respect, common interests, and a commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring countries were also emphasized.
During the meeting, women leaders of Jamaat presented gifts to the Ambassador, with photos later published on the party’s official Facebook page.
Clear stance on the UN Human Rights Office
When asked about Jamaat’s position on the UN Human Rights Office, Taher said, “If it is used to conspire against culture or religion, we will oppose it. However, if it is for the country’s welfare, we have no objection.”
He added that there were no specific discussions on law and order, political violence, or neighboring India during the meeting. However, emphasis was placed on mutual cooperation regarding regional security.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair were also present at the briefing.
