One of football history’s greatest stars, Cristiano Ronaldo, has announced that he will soon say goodbye to the pitch. The 40-year-old Portuguese star said that leaving behind a long and glorious career will not be easy, but he has long planned for his future life after football.
The Al Nassr forward currently holds the record as the top scorer in history with a total of 952 goals for club and country. Last month, he stated that he aims to reach the milestone of 1,000 goals before retiring.
In an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said, “Very soon. I know it will be very difficult, but I have been preparing for this moment for many years. The thrill of scoring goals cannot be found elsewhere. Still, everything in life has a beginning and an end.”
He added, “After retirement, I want to dedicate more time to myself and my family. Growing up with my children—that will be my new life.”
Ronaldo also mentioned his former club Manchester United, from which he departed unexpectedly three years ago.
He said, “I am truly saddened because United will always be my heart club. But right now, the club lacks a strong structure. I hope this changes in the present and future because their potential is extraordinary.”
Last season, Manchester United finished 15th in the English Premier League, their worst result since 1973–74.
Ronaldo praised current coach Rúben Amorim, saying, “He is giving his best effort, but in the current situation, performing a miracle is impossible.”
Analysts believe Ronaldo’s statements signal the end of an era in football. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has dominated international football for over 20 years, and every goal and trophy of his career will be remembered as a unique chapter in world football history.
