The incident happened on Tuesday (25 November) evening near Ambottola market adjacent to the campus. After the clash, angry students blocked the Chougacha–Dhaka highway in protest and detained the Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer. Police and military forces were deployed to control the situation.
Eyewitnesses reported that on Monday (24 November), the female student was harassed at a shop in Ambottola market. Upon learning this, her fellow students confronted the shopkeeper the next day, which escalated into arguments and a physical altercation. A large group of locals then attacked the students, using loudspeakers to call others to join.
During the clash, bricks were thrown, there were chases and counter-chases, and the campus turned into a battleground. A journalist’s bicycle was burned, and some reporters’ phones were attempted to be snatched.
The university’s proctorial body tried to control the situation but failed. After three hours without law enforcement intervention, student frustration grew. Eventually, the Vice-Chancellor, Treasurer, and proctorial team arrived to calm both sides. The army and police brought the situation under control after 9 PM. Injured students were visited by university officials at the medical center.
Chemical Engineering students stated that a large group of locals attacked them while they were confronting the shopkeeper about the harassment incident. The students demanded the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Majid and Treasurer Prof. Dr. Hossain Al Mamun, whom they had detained for four hours.
Proctor Dr. Md. Omar Faruk said, "The clash was primarily caused by harassment of a student. Our proctorial team and faculty tried to control the situation, but delays in law enforcement escalated tensions. Many students were injured." After negotiations, students were assured that their demands would be met by 5 PM on Wednesday (26 November), after which the detained officials returned to their residences after 1 AM.
