England batsman Joe Root finally reached triple figures in Australia. On the first day of the day-night Test at Gabba Stadium on Thursday, December 4, Root scored his career 40th century, his first in Australia, after 30 innings, 16 Tests, and 12 years of effort.
Root spent 4,396 days achieving this milestone. His previous highest score in Australia was 89. At the end of day one, he remained unbeaten on 135 runs off 202 balls.
Australia’s pacer Mitchell Starc disrupted England’s strong start, taking six wickets on the first day and surpassing Pakistan legend Wasim Akram’s 414 wickets, setting a record for left-arm pacers with 418 Test wickets.
England scored 325 for 9 in 74 overs on the first day. Root’s unbeaten 135 provided a solid foundation. Fans will closely watch the Root–Starc battle on the second day, which could shape the match outcome.
