Argentine football legend Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami CF. He announced his decision on Tuesday (April 14), citing personal reasons.
Mascherano took charge of Inter Miami in November 2024. Under his coaching, the team achieved notable success in a short period, winning 27 out of 47 matches.
During his tenure, the club won the MLS Cup for the first time in its history last season, marking a significant milestone. Additionally, the team set a new record in the 2024–25 season by scoring 101 goals, the highest in MLS history.
Inter Miami also performed well on the international stage. They advanced to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup after defeating strong opponents in the group stage, although they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.
In his farewell message, Mascherano expressed gratitude to the club management, coaching staff, and players. He said that the players’ support and performances made his time memorable. He also thanked the fans and wished the club continued success.
Currently, Inter Miami sits third in the MLS Eastern Conference with 12 points from 7 matches. Following Mascherano’s departure, Guillermo Hoyos will serve as interim coach. The team will play their next match against Colorado on April 18 under the new coaching setup.
