Iranian authorities have arrested four individuals over alleged attempts to “disrupt political and social order” and for “acting in the interests of Israel and the United States” during nationwide protests last month, according to Iranian media reports.
Among those arrested are prominent reformist politicians Azar Mansouri, head of Iran’s Reform Front; former diplomat Mohsen Aminzadeh; and former parliamentarian Ebrahim Asgharzadeh. The name of the fourth individual has not yet been disclosed.
Iran’s judiciary said the group was involved in “organizing and leading extensive activities aimed at disrupting the political and social situation.” State-run news agency Mizan reported that they attempted to “legitimize the actions of terrorist elements active on the streets.”
The Reform Front confirmed the arrests in a statement, saying Mansouri was detained outside his home under a judicial order by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard intelligence unit. The organization also said summonses had been issued for other senior members, including vice-chairman Mohsen Armin and secretary Badral Sadat Mofidi.
The arrests come amid widespread anger following the deaths of thousands of Iranians during unrest in January. Protests initially erupted in Tehran over economic hardship before spreading nationwide into broader anti-government demonstrations.
Iranian authorities have labeled protesters as “terrorists” and blamed the unrest on interference by Israel and the United States.
