A Hong Kong court has sentenced pro-democracy media owner Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison under China’s national security law. Press and human rights organizations have condemned the verdict as “brutal and deeply unjust.”
The verdict, announced on Monday, concludes one of Hong Kong’s most high-profile national security trials, which lasted nearly five years.
Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was first arrested in August 2020. He was convicted late last year on three charges—two related to foreign collusion and one concerning seditious publications. The court stated that Lai was the principal planner and driving force behind the conspiracy.
The 78-year-old Lai, who is also a British citizen, denied all charges and told the court that he is a “political prisoner” and a victim of repression by Beijing.
The 20-year sentence almost certainly means he may spend the rest of his life in prison. His family, lawyers and supporters have warned that due to heart rhythm issues, high blood pressure and other health problems, he faces a serious risk of dying in custody.
Lai appeared solemn as he left the courtroom, while members of the public struggled to hold back tears.
The verdict has sparked widespread international criticism and concern, particularly regarding press freedom and human rights.
